All the World Guilty

Then what [a]advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Great in every respect. First, that (A)they were entrusted with the (B)actual words of God. What then? If (C)some [b]did not believe, their [c]unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? [d](D)Far from it! Rather, God must prove to be true, though every person be found (E)a liar, as it is written:

(F)So that You are justified in Your words,
And prevail [e]when You are judged.”

But if our unrighteousness [f](G)demonstrates the righteousness of God, (H)what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? ((I)I am speaking from a human viewpoint.) (J)Far from it! For otherwise, how will (K)God judge the world? But if through my lie (L)the truth of God abounded to His glory, (M)why am I also still being judged as a sinner? And why not say (just as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), “(N)Let’s do evil that good may come of it”? [g]Their condemnation is deserved.

What then? [h](O)Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both (P)Jews and (Q)Greeks are (R)all under sin; 10 as it is written:

(S)There is no righteous person, not even one;
11 There is no one who understands,
There is no one who seeks out God;
12 They have all turned aside, together they have become [i]corrupt;
There is no one who does good,
There is not even one.”
13 (T)Their throat is an open grave,
With their tongues they keep deceiving,”
(U)The venom of [j]asps is under their lips”;
14 (V)Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”;
15 (W)Their feet are swift to shed blood,
16 Destruction and misery are in their paths,
17 And they have not known the way of peace.”
18 (X)There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19 Now we know that whatever the (Y)Law says, it speaks to (Z)those who are [k]under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and (AA)all the world may become accountable to God; 20 because (AB)by the works [l]of the Law [m]none of mankind will be justified in His sight; for [n](AC)through the Law comes [o]knowledge of sin.

Justification by Faith

21 But now apart [p]from the Law (AD)the righteousness of God has been revealed, being (AE)witnessed by the [q]Law and the Prophets, 22 but it is the (AF)righteousness of God through (AG)faith (AH)in Jesus Christ for (AI)all those [r]who believe; for (AJ)there is no distinction, 23 for all [s](AK)have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift (AL)by His grace through (AM)the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God displayed publicly as (AN)a [t]propitiation [u](AO)in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, [v]because in God’s merciful (AP)restraint He (AQ)let the sins previously committed go unpunished; 26 for the demonstration, that is, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who [w]has faith in Jesus.

27 Where then is (AR)boasting? It has been excluded. By (AS)what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 [x]For (AT)we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from works [y]of the Law. 29 Or (AU)is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed (AV)God (AW)who will justify the [z]circumcised [aa]by faith and the [ab]uncircumcised through faith (AX)is one.

31 Do we then nullify [ac]the Law through faith? (AY)Far from it! On the contrary, we (AZ)establish the Law.

God’s Judgment Defended

What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision? Much in every way! Chiefly because (A)to them were committed the [a]oracles of God. For what if (B)some did not believe? (C)Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? (D)Certainly not! Indeed, let (E)God be [b]true but (F)every man a liar. As it is written:

(G)“That You may be justified in Your words,
And may overcome when You are judged.”

But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? (H)(I speak as a man.) Certainly not! For then (I)how will God judge the world?

For if the truth of God has increased through my lie to His glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner? And why not say, (J)“Let us do evil that good may come”?—as we are slanderously reported and as some affirm that we say. Their [c]condemnation is just.

All Have Sinned(K)

What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that (L)they are all under sin.

10 As it is written:

There is none who seeks after God.
12 They have all turned aside;
They have together become unprofitable;
There is none who does good, no, not one.”
13 “Their(N) throat is an open [d]tomb;

15 “Their(Q) feet are swift to shed blood;

19 Now we know that whatever (S)the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that (T)every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become [e]guilty before God. 20 Therefore (U)by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

God’s Righteousness Through Faith

21 But now (V)the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, (W)being witnessed by the Law (X)and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all [f]and on all who believe. For (Y)there is no difference; 23 for (Z)all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified [g]freely (AA)by His grace (AB)through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth (AC)as a [h]propitiation (AD)by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over (AE)the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Boasting Excluded

27 (AF)Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude (AG)that a man is [i]justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since (AH)there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man)

God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?

For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?

And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.

What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:

30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

All the World Guilty

Then what is the advantage of the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Great in every respect. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God [His very [a]words].(A) What then? If some did not believe or were unfaithful [to God], their lack of belief will not nullify and make invalid the faithfulness of God and His word, will it? Certainly not! Let God be found true [as He will be], though every person be found a liar, just as it is written [in Scripture],

That You may be justified in Your words,
And prevail when You are judged [by sinful men].”(B)

But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? God is not wrong to inflict His wrath [on us], is He? (I am speaking in purely human terms.) Certainly not! For otherwise, how will God judge the world? But [as you might say] if through my lie God’s truth was magnified and abounded to His glory, why am I still being judged as a sinner? And why not say, (as some slanderously report and claim that we teach) “Let us do evil so that good may come of it”? Their condemnation [by God] is just.

Well then, are we [Jews] better off than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks (Gentiles) are under the control of sin and subject to its power. 10 As it is written and forever remains written,

There is none righteous [none that meets God’s standard], not even one.(C)

19 Now we know that whatever the Law [of Moses] says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that [the excuses of] every mouth may be silenced [from protesting] and that all the world may be held accountable to God [and subject to His judgment]. 20 For no [b]person will be justified [freed of guilt and declared righteous] in His sight by [trying to do] the works of the Law. For through the Law we become conscious of sin [and the recognition of sin directs us toward repentance, but provides no remedy for sin].

Justification by Faith

21 But now the righteousness of God has been clearly revealed [independently and completely] apart from the Law, though it is [actually] confirmed by the Law and the [words and writings of the] Prophets. 22 This righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ for all those [Jew or Gentile] who believe [and trust in Him and acknowledge Him as God’s Son]. There is no distinction,(J) 23 since all have sinned and continually fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are being justified [declared free of the guilt of sin, made acceptable to God, and granted eternal life] as a gift by His [precious, undeserved] [c]grace, through the redemption [the payment for our sin] which is [provided] in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God displayed publicly [before the eyes of the world] as a [life-giving] [d]sacrifice of atonement and reconciliation (propitiation) by His blood [to be received] through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness [which demands punishment for sin], because in His forbearance [His deliberate restraint] He passed over the sins previously committed [before Jesus’ crucifixion]. 26 It was to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the One who justifies those who have faith in Jesus [and rely confidently on Him as Savior].

27 Then what becomes of [our] boasting? It is excluded [entirely ruled out, banished]. On what principle? On [the principle of good] works? No, but on the principle of faith. 28 For we maintain that an individual is justified by faith distinctly apart from works of the Law [the observance of which has nothing to do with justification, that is, being declared free of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to God]. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not also the God of Gentiles [who were not given the Law]? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed it is one [and the same] God who will justify the circumcised by faith [which began with Abraham] and the uncircumcised through [their newly acquired] faith.

31 Do we then nullify the Law by this faith [making the Law of no effect, overthrowing it]? Certainly not! On the contrary, we confirm and establish and uphold the Law [since it convicts us all of sin, pointing to the need for salvation].

What, then, [is] the superiority of the Jew? or what the profit of the circumcision?

much in every way; for first, indeed, that they were intrusted with the oracles of God;

for what, if certain were faithless? shall their faithlessness the faithfulness of god make useless?

let it not be! and let God become true, and every man false, according as it hath been written, `That Thou mayest be declared righteous in Thy words, and mayest overcome in Thy being judged.'

And, if our unrighteousness God's righteousness doth establish, what shall we say? is God unrighteous who is inflicting the wrath? (after the manner of a man I speak)

let it not be! since how shall God judge the world?

for if the truth of God in my falsehood did more abound to His glory, why yet am I also as a sinner judged?

and not, as we are evil spoken of, and as certain affirm us to say -- `We may do the evil things, that the good ones may come?' whose judgment is righteous.

What, then? are we better? not at all! for we did before charge both Jews and Greeks with being all under sin,

10 according as it hath been written -- `There is none righteous, not even one;

11 There is none who is understanding, there is none who is seeking after God.

12 All did go out of the way, together they became unprofitable, there is none doing good, there is not even one.

13 A sepulchre opened [is] their throat; with their tongues they used deceit; poison of asps [is] under their lips.

14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.

15 Swift [are] their feet to shed blood.

16 Ruin and misery [are] in their ways.

17 And a way of peace they did not know.

18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.'

19 And we have known that as many things as the law saith, to those in the law it doth speak, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may come under judgment to God;

20 wherefore by works of law shall no flesh be declared righteous before Him, for through law is a knowledge of sin.

21 And now apart from law hath the righteousness of God been manifested, testified to by the law and the prophets,

22 and the righteousness of God [is] through the faith of Jesus Christ to all, and upon all those believing, -- for there is no difference,

23 for all did sin, and are come short of the glory of God --

24 being declared righteous freely by His grace through the redemption that [is] in Christ Jesus,

25 whom God did set forth a mercy seat, through the faith in his blood, for the shewing forth of His righteousness, because of the passing over of the bygone sins in the forbearance of God --

26 for the shewing forth of His righteousness in the present time, for His being righteous, and declaring him righteous who [is] of the faith of Jesus.

27 Where then [is] the boasting? it was excluded; by what law? of works? no, but by a law of faith:

28 therefore do we reckon a man to be declared righteous by faith, apart from works of law.

29 The God of Jews only [is He], and not also of nations?

30 yes, also of nations; since one [is] God who shall declare righteous the circumcision by faith, and the uncircumcision through the faith.

31 Law then do we make useless through the faith? let it not be! yea, we do establish law.

Results of Justification

(A)Therefore, having been justified by faith, [a](B)we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we also have (C)obtained our introduction by faith into this grace (D)in which we stand; and [b]we celebrate in hope of the glory of God. (E)And not only this, but [c]we also (F)celebrate in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about (G)perseverance; and (H)perseverance, (I)proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope (J)does not disappoint, because the love of God has been (K)poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

For while we were still (L)helpless, (M)at the right time (N)Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous person; [d]though perhaps for the good person someone would even dare to die. But God (O)demonstrates (P)His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, (Q)Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified [e](R)by His blood, we shall be saved (S)from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were (T)enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved [f](U)by His life. 11 (V)And not only this, but [g]we also celebrate in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received (W)the reconciliation.

12 Therefore, just as through (X)one man sin entered into the world, and (Y)death through sin, and (Z)so death spread to all mankind, because all sinned— 13 for [h]until the Law sin was in the world, but (AA)sin is not [i]counted against anyone when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned (AB)in the likeness of the [j]violation committed by Adam, who is a [k](AC)type of Him who was to come.

15 But [l]the gracious gift is not like the offense. For if by the offense of (AD)the one (AE)the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by (AF)the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. 16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand (AG)the judgment arose from one offense, [m]resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the gracious gift arose from many offenses, [n]resulting in justification. 17 For if by the offense of the one, death reigned (AH)through the one, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness (AI)reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

18 So then, as through (AJ)one offense [o]the result was condemnation to all mankind, so also through one (AK)act of righteousness [p]the result was (AL)justification of life to all mankind. 19 For as through the one man’s disobedience (AM)the many (AN)were made sinners, so also through (AO)the obedience of the One (AP)the many will be made righteous. 20 [q](AQ)The Law came in so that the offense would increase; but where sin increased, (AR)grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as (AS)sin reigned in death, so also (AT)grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Believers Are Dead to Sin, Alive to God

(AU)What shall we say then? Are we to (AV)continue in sin so that grace may increase? [r](AW)Far from it! How shall we who (AX)died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been (AY)baptized into (AZ)Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been (BA)buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was (BB)raised from the dead through the (BC)glory of the Father, so we too may walk in (BD)newness of life. For (BE)if we have become [s]united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be [t]in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our (BF)old [u]self was (BG)crucified with Him, in order that our (BH)body of sin might be [v]done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for (BI)the one who has died is [w]freed from sin.

Now (BJ)if we have died with Christ, we believe that (BK)we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been (BL)raised from the dead, [x]is never to die again; (BM)death no longer is master over Him. 10 For [y]the death that He died, He died to sin once for all time; but [z]the life that He lives, He lives to [aa]God. 11 So you too, consider yourselves to be (BN)dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Therefore sin is not to (BO)reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13 and do not go on (BP)presenting [ab]the parts of your body to sin as [ac]instruments of unrighteousness; but (BQ)present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and [ad]your body’s parts as [ae]instruments of righteousness for God. 14 For (BR)sin shall not (BS)be master over you, for (BT)you are not under [af]the Law but (BU)under grace.

15 What then? (BV)Are we to sin because we are not under [ag]the Law but under grace? [ah](BW)Far from it! 16 Do you not (BX)know that the one to whom you present yourselves as (BY)slaves for obedience, you are slaves of that same one whom you obey, either of (BZ)sin [ai]resulting in death, or of obedience [aj]resulting in righteousness? 17 But (CA)thanks be to God that [ak]though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that [al](CB)form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and after being (CC)freed from sin, you became slaves to righteousness. 19 (CD)I am speaking [am]in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just (CE)as you presented [an]the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, [ao]resulting in further lawlessness, so now present [ap]your body’s parts as slaves to righteousness, [aq]resulting in sanctification.

20 For (CF)when you were slaves of sin, you were free in relation to righteousness. 21 Therefore what [ar](CG)benefit were you then [as]deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is (CH)death. 22 But now having been (CI)freed from sin and (CJ)enslaved to God, you [at]derive your [au](CK)benefit, [av]resulting in sanctification, and (CL)the outcome, eternal life. 23 For the wages of (CM)sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is (CN)eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Believers United to Christ

Or do you not know, (CO)brothers and sisters (for I am speaking to those who know the [aw]Law), that the [ax]Law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? For (CP)the married woman is bound by law to her [ay]husband as long as he is alive; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law [az]concerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is alive she [ba]gives herself to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress if she [bb]gives herself to another man.

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you also were (CQ)put to death (CR)in regard to the Law (CS)through the body of Christ, so that you might belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For while we were (CT)in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were (CU)brought to light by the Law, were at work (CV)in [bc]the parts of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been (CW)released from the Law, having (CX)died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in (CY)newness of (CZ)the [bd]Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

(DA)What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? (DB)[be]Far from it! On the contrary, (DC)I would not have come to know sin except [bf]through the Law; for I would not have known about [bg]coveting if the Law had not said, “(DD)You shall not [bh]covet.” But sin, (DE)taking an opportunity (DF)through the commandment, produced in me [bi]coveting of every kind; for (DG)apart [bj]from the Law sin is dead. I was once alive apart [bk]from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin came to life, and I died; 10 and this commandment, which was [bl](DH)to result in life, proved [bm]to result in death for me; 11 for sin, (DI)taking an opportunity (DJ)through the commandment, (DK)deceived me, and through it, killed me. 12 (DL)So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? [bn](DM)Far from it! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by bringing about my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.

The Conflict of Serving Two Masters

14 For we know that the Law is (DN)spiritual, but I am (DO)fleshly, (DP)sold [bo](DQ)into bondage to sin. 15 For (DR)I do not understand what I am doing; for I am not practicing (DS)what I want to do, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 However, if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with (DT)the Law, that the Law is good. 17 But now, (DU)no longer am I the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my (DV)flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For (DW)the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I do the very thing I do not want, (DX)I am no longer the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 I find then (DY)the [bp]principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully agree with the law of God [bq]in (DZ)the inner person, 23 but I see (EA)a different law in [br]the parts of my body waging war against the (EB)law of my mind, and making me a prisoner [bs]of (EC)the law of sin, the law which is in [bt]my body’s parts. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from [bu](ED)the body of this (EE)death? 25 (EF)Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh (EG)the law of sin.

Deliverance from Bondage

Therefore there is now no (EH)condemnation at all for those who are (EI)in (EJ)Christ Jesus. For (EK)the law of the Spirit of life [bv]in (EL)Christ Jesus (EM)has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For (EN)what the Law could not do, [bw](EO)weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in (EP)the likeness of [bx]sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the (EQ)requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who (ER)do not walk [by]according to the flesh but [bz]according to the Spirit. For those who are in accord with the flesh set their minds on (ES)the things of the flesh, but those who are in accord with the Spirit, (ET)the things of the Spirit. (EU)For the mind [ca]set on the flesh is (EV)death, but the mind [cb]set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind [cc]set on the flesh is (EW)hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are (EX)in the flesh cannot please God.

However, you are not (EY)in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God (EZ)dwells in you. But (FA)if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 (FB)If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is [cd]alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who (FC)raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, (FD)He who raised (FE)Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies [ce]through His Spirit who dwells in you.

12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for (FF)if you are living in accord with the flesh, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you are (FG)putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are (FH)being led by the Spirit of God, these are (FI)sons and daughters of God. 15 For you (FJ)have not received a spirit of slavery [cf]leading to fear again, but you (FK)have received [cg]a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters by which we cry out, “(FL)Abba! [ch]Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself (FM)testifies with our spirit that we are (FN)children of God, 17 and if children, (FO)heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, (FP)if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (FQ)are not worthy to be compared with the (FR)glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the (FS)eagerly awaiting creation waits for (FT)the revealing of the (FU)sons and daughters of God. 20 For the creation (FV)was subjected to (FW)futility, not willingly, but (FX)because of Him who subjected it, [ci]in hope 21 that (FY)the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation (FZ)groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 (GA)And not only that, but also we ourselves, having (GB)the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves (GC)groan within ourselves, (GD)waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons and daughters, (GE)the redemption of our body. 24 For (GF)in hope we have been saved, but (GG)hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But (GH)if we hope for what we do not see, through perseverance we wait eagerly for it.

Our Victory in Christ

26 Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for (GI)we do not know what to pray for as we should, but (GJ)the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with [cj]groanings too deep for words; 27 and (GK)He who searches the hearts knows what (GL)the mind of the Spirit is, because He (GM)intercedes for the [ck]saints according to the will of God.

28 And we know that [cl]God [cm]causes (GN)all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are (GO)called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He (GP)foreknew, He also (GQ)predestined to become (GR)conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the (GS)firstborn among many brothers and sisters; 30 and these whom He (GT)predestined, He also (GU)called; and these whom He called, He also (GV)justified; and these whom He justified, He also (GW)glorified.

31 (GX)What then shall we say to these things? (GY)If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who (GZ)did not spare His own Son, but (HA)delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring charges against (HB)God’s elect? (HC)God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who (HD)condemns? Christ Jesus is He who (HE)died, but rather, was [cn](HF)raised, who is (HG)at the right hand of God, who also (HH)intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from (HI)the love of [co]Christ? Will (HJ)tribulation, or trouble, or (HK)persecution, or (HL)famine, or (HM)nakedness, or (HN)danger, or sword? 36 Just as it is written:

(HO)For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We were regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly (HP)conquer through (HQ)Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither (HR)death, nor life, nor (HS)angels, nor principalities, nor (HT)things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from (HU)the love of God that is (HV)in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Faith Triumphs in Trouble

Therefore, (A)having been justified by faith, [a]we have (B)peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, (C)through whom also we have access by faith into this grace (D)in which we stand, and (E)rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but (F)we also glory in tribulations, (G)knowing that tribulation produces [b]perseverance; (H)and perseverance, [c]character; and character, hope. (I)Now hope does not disappoint, (J)because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Christ in Our Place

For when we were still without strength, [d]in due time (K)Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But (L)God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified (M)by His blood, we shall be saved (N)from wrath through Him. 10 For (O)if when we were enemies (P)we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved (Q)by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also (R)rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Death in Adam, Life in Christ(S)

12 Therefore, just as (T)through one man sin entered the world, and (U)death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but (V)sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, (W)who is a type of Him who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the [e]offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded (X)to many. 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. 20 Moreover (AB)the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace (AC)abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

What shall we say then? (AD)Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who (AE)died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that (AF)as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus (AG)were baptized into His death? Therefore we were (AH)buried with Him through baptism into death, that (AI)just as Christ was raised from the dead by (AJ)the glory of the Father, (AK)even so we also should walk in newness of life.

(AL)For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that (AM)our old man was crucified with Him, that (AN)the body of sin might be [j]done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For (AO)he who has died has been [k]freed from sin. Now (AP)if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that (AQ)Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, (AR)He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, (AS)He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, [l]reckon yourselves to be (AT)dead indeed to sin, but (AU)alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

From Slaves of Sin to Slaves of God

15 What then? Shall we sin (AZ)because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that (BA)to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart (BB)that form of doctrine to which you were [n]delivered. 18 And (BC)having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness [o]for holiness.

20 For when you were (BD)slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 (BE)What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? Freed from the Law

Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law [r]has dominion over a man as long as he lives? For (BJ)the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. So then (BK)if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. Therefore, my brethren, you also have become (BL)dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should (BM)bear fruit to God. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law (BN)were at work in our members (BO)to bear fruit to death. But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve (BP)in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

Sin’s Advantage in the Law

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, (BQ)I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, (BR)“You shall not covet.” But (BS)sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For (BT)apart from the law sin was dead. I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. 10 And the commandment, (BU)which was to bring life, I found to bring death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me. 12 Therefore (BV)the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

Law Cannot Save from Sin

13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, (BW)sold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. (BX)For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that (BY)in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I (BZ)delight in the law of God according to (CA)the inward man. 23 But (CB)I see another law in (CC)my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me (CD)from this body of death? 25 (CE)I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

Free from Indwelling Sin

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, (CF)who[s] do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For (CG)the law of (CH)the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from (CI)the law of sin and death. For (CJ)what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, (CK)God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who (CL)do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For (CM)those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, (CN)the things of the Spirit. For (CO)to be [t]carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because (CP)the [u]carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, (CQ)nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of (CR)Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, (CS)He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies [v]through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Sonship Through the Spirit

12 (CT)Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For (CU)if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you (CV)put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For (CW)as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For (CX)you did not receive the spirit of bondage again (CY)to fear, but you received the (CZ)Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, (DA)“Abba,[w] Father.” 16 (DB)The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then (DC)heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, (DD)if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

From Suffering to Glory

18 For I consider that (DE)the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For (DF)the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For (DG)the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of [x]corruption into the glorious (DH)liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation (DI)groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have (DJ)the firstfruits of the Spirit, (DK)even we ourselves groan (DL)within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the (DM)redemption of our body. 24 For we were saved in this hope, but (DN)hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For (DO)we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but (DP)the Spirit Himself makes intercession [y]for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now (DQ)He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints (DR)according to the will of God.

28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those (DS)who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom (DT)He foreknew, (DU)He also predestined (DV)to be conformed to the image of His Son, (DW)that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also (DX)called; whom He called, these He also (DY)justified; and whom He justified, these He also (DZ)glorified.

God’s Everlasting Love

31 What then shall we say to these things? (EA)If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 (EB)He who did not spare His own Son, but (EC)delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? (ED)It is God who justifies. 34 (EE)Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, (EF)who is even at the right hand of God, (EG)who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:

(EH)“For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”

37 (EI)Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor (EJ)principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.

17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.

12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,

21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.

34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Results of Justification

Therefore, since we have been justified [that is, acquitted of sin, declared blameless before God] by faith, [let us grasp the fact that] we have peace with God [and the joy of reconciliation with Him] through our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed). Through Him we also have access by faith into this [remarkable state of] grace in which we [firmly and safely and securely] stand. Let us rejoice in our [a]hope and the confident assurance of [experiencing and enjoying] the glory of [our great] God [the manifestation of His excellence and power]. And not only this, but [with joy] let us exult in our sufferings and rejoice in our hardships, knowing that hardship (distress, pressure, trouble) produces patient endurance; and endurance, proven character (spiritual maturity); and proven character, hope and confident assurance [of eternal salvation]. Such hope [in God’s promises] never disappoints us, because God’s love has been abundantly poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

While we were still helpless [powerless to provide for our salvation], at the right time Christ died [as a substitute] for the ungodly. Now it is an extraordinary thing for one to willingly give his life even for an upright man, though perhaps for a good man [one who is noble and selfless and worthy] someone might even dare to die. But God clearly shows and proves His own love for us, by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Therefore, since we have now been justified [declared free of the guilt of sin] by His blood, [how much more certain is it that] we will be saved from the [b]wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, it is much more certain, having been reconciled, that we will be saved [from the consequences of sin] by His life [that is, we will be saved because Christ lives today]. 11 Not only that, but we also rejoice in God [rejoicing in His love and perfection] through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received and enjoy our reconciliation [with God].(A)

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, so death spread to all people [no one being able to stop it or escape its power], because they all sinned. 13 Sin was [committed] in the world before the Law [was given], but sin is not charged [against anyone] when there is no law [against it]. 14 Yet death ruled [over mankind] from Adam to Moses [the Lawgiver], even over those who had not sinned [c]as Adam did. Adam is a type of Him (Christ) who was to come [but in reverse—Adam brought destruction, Christ brought salvation].(B)

15 But the free gift [of God] is not like the trespass [because the gift of grace overwhelms the fall of man]. For if many died by one man’s trespass [Adam’s sin], much more [abundantly] did God’s grace and the gift [that comes] by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, overflow to [benefit] the many. 16 Nor is the gift [of grace] like that which came through the one who sinned. For on the one hand the judgment [following the sin] resulted from one trespass and brought condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift resulted from many trespasses and brought justification [the release from sin’s penalty for those who believe]. 17 For if by the trespass of the one (Adam), death reigned through the one (Adam), much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in [eternal] life through the One, Jesus Christ.

18 So then as through one trespass [Adam’s sin] there resulted condemnation for all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to [d]all men. 19 For just as through one man’s disobedience [his failure to hear, his carelessness] the many were made sinners, so through the obedience of the one Man the many will be made righteous and acceptable to God and brought into right standing with Him. 20 But the Law came to increase and expand [the awareness of] the trespass [by defining and unmasking sin]. But where sin increased, [God’s remarkable, gracious gift of] grace [His unmerited favor] has surpassed it and increased all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, so also grace would reign through righteousness which brings eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Believers Are Dead to Sin, Alive to God

What shall we say [to all this]? Should we continue in sin and practice sin as a habit so that [God’s gift of] [e]grace may increase and overflow? Certainly not! How can we, the very ones who died to sin, continue to live in it any longer? Or are you ignorant of the fact that all of us who have been [f]baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We have therefore been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory and power of the Father, we too might walk habitually in newness of life [abandoning our old ways]. For if we have become one with Him [permanently united] in the likeness of His death, we will also certainly be [one with Him and share fully] in the likeness of His resurrection. We know that our old [g]self [our human nature without the Holy Spirit] was nailed to the cross with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin. For the person who has died [with Christ] has been freed from [the power of] sin.

Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live [together] with Him, because we know [the self-evident truth] that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has power over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin [ending its power and paying the sinner’s debt] once and for all; and the life that He lives, He lives to [glorify] God [in unbroken fellowship with Him]. 11 Even so, consider yourselves to be dead to sin [and your relationship to it broken], but alive to God [in unbroken fellowship with Him] in Christ Jesus.

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts and passions. 13 Do not go on offering members of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness. But offer yourselves to God [in a decisive act] as those alive [raised] from the dead [to a new life], and your members [all of your abilities—sanctified, set apart] as instruments of righteousness [yielded] to God. 14 For sin will no longer be a master over you, since you are not under Law [as slaves], but under [unmerited] grace [as recipients of God’s favor and mercy].

15 What then [are we to conclude]? Shall we sin because we are not under Law, but under [God’s] grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that when you continually offer yourselves to someone to do his will, you are the slaves of the one whom you obey, either [slaves] of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness (right standing with God)? 17 But thank God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient with all your heart to the standard of teaching in which you were instructed and to which you were committed. 18 And having been set free from sin, you have become the slaves of righteousness [of conformity to God’s will and purpose]. 19 I am speaking in [familiar] human terms because of your natural limitations [your spiritual immaturity]. For just as you presented your bodily members as slaves to impurity and to [moral] lawlessness, leading to further lawlessness, so now offer your members [your abilities, your talents] as slaves to righteousness, leading to [h]sanctification [that is, being set apart for God’s purpose].

20 When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness [you had no desire to conform to God’s will]. 21 So what benefit did you get at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? [None!] For the outcome of those things is death! 22 But now since you have been set free from sin and have become [willing] slaves to God, you have your benefit, resulting in sanctification [being made holy and set apart for God’s purpose], and the outcome [of this] is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God [that is, His remarkable, overwhelming gift of grace to believers] is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Believers United to Christ

Or do you not know, [i]brothers and sisters (for I am speaking to those who know the Law), that the Law has jurisdiction [to rule] over a person as long as he lives? For the married woman [as an example] is bound and remains bound by law to her husband while he lives; but if her husband dies, she is released and exempt from the law concerning her husband. Accordingly, she will be designated as an adulteress if she [j]unites herself to another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from the law [regarding marriage], so that she is not an adulteress if she marries another man.

Therefore, my [k]fellow believers, you too died to the Law through the [crucified] body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. When we were living in the flesh [trapped by sin], the sinful passions, which were awakened by [that which] the Law [identifies as sin], were at work in our body to bear fruit for death [since the willingness to sin led to death and separation from God]. But now we have been released from the Law and its penalty, having died [through Christ] to that by which we were held captive, so that we serve [God] in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter [of the Law].

What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, if it had not been for the Law, I would not have recognized sin. For I would not have known [for example] about coveting [what belongs to another, and would have had no sense of guilt] if the Law had not [repeatedly] said, “You shall not covet.”(C) But sin, finding an opportunity through the commandment [to express itself] produced in me every kind of coveting and selfish desire. For without the Law sin is dead [the recognition of sin is inactive]. I was once alive without [knowledge of] the Law; but when the commandment came [and I understood its meaning], sin became alive and I died [since the Law sentenced me to death].(D) 10 And the very commandment which was intended to bring life, actually proved to bring death for me.(E) 11 For sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, beguiled and completely deceived me, and [l]using it as a weapon killed me [separating me from God]. 12 So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Did that which is good [the Law], then become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, in order that it might be revealed as sin, was producing death in me by [using] this good thing [as a weapon], so that through the commandment sin would become exceedingly sinful.

The Conflict of Two Natures

14 We know that the Law is spiritual, but I am a creature of the flesh [worldly, self-reliant—carnal and unspiritual], sold into slavery to sin [and serving under its control]. 15 For I do not understand my own actions [I am baffled and bewildered by them]. I do not practice what I want to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate [and yielding to my human nature, my worldliness—my sinful capacity]. 16 Now if I habitually do what I do not want to do, [that means] I agree with the Law, confessing that it is good (morally excellent). 17 So now [if that is the case, then] it is no longer I who do it [the disobedient thing which I despise], but the sin [nature] which lives in me. 18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh [my human nature, my worldliness—my sinful capacity]. For the willingness [to do good] is present in me, but the doing of good is not. 19 For the good that I want to do, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want to do, I am no longer the one doing it [that is, it is not me that acts], but the sin [nature] which lives in me.

21 So I find it to be the law [of my inner self], that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully delight in the law of God in my inner self [with my new nature],(F) 23 but I see a different law and rule of action in the members of my body [in its appetites and desires], waging war against the law of my mind and subduing me and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is within my members. 24 Wretched and miserable man that I am! Who will [rescue me and] set me free from this body of death [this corrupt, mortal existence]? 25 Thanks be to God [for my deliverance] through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind serve the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh [my human nature, my worldliness, my sinful capacity—I serve] the law of sin.

Escape from Bondage

Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior].(G) For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do [that is, overcome sin and remove its penalty, its power] being weakened by the flesh [man’s nature without the Holy Spirit], God did: He sent His own Son in the likeness of sinful man as an offering for sin. And He condemned sin in the flesh [subdued it and overcame it in the person of His own Son],(H) so that the [righteous and just] requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not live our lives in the ways of the flesh [guided by worldliness and our sinful nature], but [live our lives] in the ways of the Spirit [guided by His power]. For those who are living according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh [which gratify the body], but those who are living according to the Spirit, [set their minds on] the things of the Spirit [His will and purpose]. Now the mind of the flesh is death [both now and forever—because it pursues sin]; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace [the spiritual well-being that comes from walking with God—both now and forever]; the mind of the flesh [with its sinful pursuits] is actively hostile to God. It does not submit itself to God’s law, since it cannot, and those who are in the flesh [living a life that caters to sinful appetites and impulses] cannot please God.

However, you are not [living] in the flesh [controlled by the sinful nature] but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God lives in you [directing and guiding you]. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him [and is not a child of God].(I) 10 If Christ lives in you, though your [natural] body is dead because of sin, your spirit is alive because of righteousness [which He provides]. 11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.

12 So then, [m]brothers and sisters, we have an obligation, but not to our flesh [our human nature, our worldliness, our sinful capacity], to live according to the [impulses of the] flesh [our nature without the Holy Spirit]— 13 for if you are living according to the [impulses of the] flesh, you are going to die. But if [you are living] by the [power of the Holy] Spirit you are habitually putting to death the sinful deeds of the body, you will [really] live forever. 14 For all who are allowing themselves to be led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading again to fear [of God’s judgment], but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons [the Spirit producing sonship] by which we [joyfully] cry, “[n]Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies and confirms together with our spirit [assuring us] that we [believers] are children of God. 17 And if [we are His] children, [then we are His] heirs also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ [sharing His spiritual blessing and inheritance], if indeed we share in His suffering so that we may also share in His glory.(J)

18 For I consider [from the standpoint of faith] that the sufferings of the present life are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us! 19 For [even the whole] creation [all nature] waits eagerly for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration and futility, not willingly [because of some intentional fault on its part], but by the will of Him who subjected it, in hope(K) 21 that the creation itself will also be freed from its bondage to decay [and gain entrance] into the glorious freedom of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been moaning together as in the pains of childbirth until now.(L) 23 And not only this, but we too, who have the first fruits of the Spirit [a joyful indication of the blessings to come], even we groan inwardly, as we wait eagerly for [the sign of] our adoption as sons—the redemption and transformation of our body [at the resurrection].(M) 24 For in this hope we were saved [by faith]. But hope [the object of] which is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait eagerly for it with patience and composure.

Our Victory in Christ

26 In the same way the Spirit [comes to us and] helps us in our weakness. We do not know what prayer to offer or how to offer it as we should, but the Spirit Himself [knows our need and at the right time] intercedes on our behalf with sighs and groanings too deep for words. 27 And He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes [before God] on behalf of [o]God’s people in accordance with God’s will.(N)

28 And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew [and loved and chose beforehand], He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son [and ultimately share in His complete sanctification], so that He would be the firstborn [the most beloved and honored] among many believers. 30 And those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified [declared free of the guilt of sin]; and those whom He justified, He also glorified [raising them to a heavenly dignity].

31 What then shall we say to all these things? If God is for us, who can be [successful] against us?(O) 32 He who did not spare [even] His own Son, but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect (His chosen ones)? It is God who justifies us [declaring us blameless and putting us in a right relationship with Himself]. 34 Who is the one who condemns us? Christ Jesus is the One who died [to pay our penalty], and more than that, who was raised [from the dead], and who is at the right hand of God interceding [with the Father] for us. 35 Who shall ever separate us from the love of [p]Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 Just as it is written and forever remains written,

For Your sake we are put to death all day long;
We are regarded as sheep for the slaughter.”(P)

37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors and gain an overwhelming victory through Him who loved us [so much that He died for us]. 38 For I am convinced [and continue to be convinced—beyond any doubt] that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present and threatening, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the [unlimited] love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Having been declared righteous, then, by faith, we have peace toward God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

and the endurance, experience; and the experience, hope;

So that, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of the Christ, for your becoming another's, who out of the dead was raised up, that we might bear fruit to God;

for when we were in the flesh, the passions of the sins, that [are] through the law, were working in our members, to bear fruit to the death;

and now we have ceased from the law, that being dead in which we were held, so that we may serve in newness of spirit, and not in oldness of letter.

What, then, shall we say? the law [is] sin? let it not be! but the sin I did not know except through law, for also the covetousness I had not known if the law had not said:

`Thou shalt not covet;' and the sin having received an opportunity, through the command, did work in me all covetousness -- for apart from law sin is dead.

And I was alive apart from law once, and the command having come, the sin revived, and I died;

10 and the command that [is] for life, this was found by me for death;

11 for the sin, having received an opportunity, through the command, did deceive me, and through it did slay [me];

12 so that the law, indeed, [is] holy, and the command holy, and righteous, and good.

13 That which is good then, to me hath it become death? let it not be! but the sin, that it might appear sin, through the good, working death to me, that the sin might become exceeding sinful through the command,

14 for we have known that the law is spiritual, and I am fleshly, sold by the sin;

15 for that which I work, I do not acknowledge; for not what I will, this I practise, but what I hate, this I do.

16 And if what I do not will, this I do, I consent to the law that [it is] good,

17 and now it is no longer I that work it, but the sin dwelling in me,

18 for I have known that there doth not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh, good: for to will is present with me, and to work that which is right I do not find,

20 And if what I do not will, this I do, it is no longer I that work it, but the sin that is dwelling in me.

21 I find, then, the law, that when I desire to do what is right, with me the evil is present,

22 for I delight in the law of God according to the inward man,

23 and I behold another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of the sin that [is] in my members.

24 A wretched man I [am]! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death?

25 I thank God -- through Jesus Christ our Lord; so then, I myself indeed with the mind do serve the law of God, and with the flesh, the law of sin.

There is, then, now no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit;

for the law of the Spirit of the life in Christ Jesus did set me free from the law of the sin and of the death;

for what the law was not able to do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, His own Son having sent in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, did condemn the sin in the flesh,

that the righteousness of the law may be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

For those who are according to the flesh, the things of the flesh do mind; and those according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit;

for the mind of the flesh [is] death, and the mind of the Spirit -- life and peace;

because the mind of the flesh [is] enmity to God, for to the law of God it doth not subject itself,

for neither is it able; and those who are in the flesh are not able to please God.

And ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God doth dwell in you; and if any one hath not the Spirit of Christ -- this one is not His;

10 and if Christ [is] in you, the body, indeed, [is] dead because of sin, and the Spirit [is] life because of righteousness,

11 and if the Spirit of Him who did raise up Jesus out of the dead doth dwell in you, He who did raise up the Christ out of the dead shall quicken also your dying bodies, through His Spirit dwelling in you.

12 So, then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh;

13 for if according to the flesh ye do live, ye are about to die; and if, by the Spirit, the deeds of the body ye put to death, ye shall live;

14 for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God;

15 for ye did not receive a spirit of bondage again for fear, but ye did receive a spirit of adoption in which we cry, `Abba -- Father.'

16 The Spirit himself doth testify with our spirit, that we are children of God;

17 and if children, also heirs, heirs, indeed, of God, and heirs together of Christ -- if, indeed, we suffer together, that we may also be glorified together.

18 For I reckon that the sufferings of the present time [are] not worthy [to be compared] with the glory about to be revealed in us;

19 for the earnest looking out of the creation doth expect the revelation of the sons of God;

20 for to vanity was the creation made subject -- not of its will, but because of Him who did subject [it] -- in hope,

21 that also the creation itself shall be set free from the servitude of the corruption to the liberty of the glory of the children of God;

22 for we have known that all the creation doth groan together, and doth travail in pain together till now.

23 And not only [so], but also we ourselves, having the first-fruit of the Spirit, we also ourselves in ourselves do groan, adoption expecting -- the redemption of our body;

24 for in hope we were saved, and hope beheld is not hope; for what any one doth behold, why also doth he hope for [it]?

25 and if what we do not behold we hope for, through continuance we expect [it].

33 Who shall lay a charge against the choice ones of God? God [is] He that is declaring righteous,
